So what have I been up to? Work work work!! And then more work!! *rolls eyes* I am going home over Christmas, and its about bloody time!! I haven't been home for Christmas since 2005… and any visits since then haven't been more than three days in a row… I miss it!! I miss spending days on end doing nothing, days on end with my best friend linda.. and Lillian… and all the rest… of hanging out with zane… with my bro and his fiancé (oh, that’s some news – they have been together for 7 years, and its now official), and hanging out with my folks, my pets, and spending time getting back to nature… instead I have been in a lonely city.. we don't keep Christmas, but its family time… and to be away from loved ones at that time of the year, when EVERYONE else is snuggled up with their nearest and dearest gets so fucking depressing… I always seem to cry.. even tho we don't keep Christmas… its like you are the only person left on the planet, yet at the same time you are in a city of millions of people.. So I am ecstatic to be home for the holiday season!! I’m also having a Monster Mash birthday party – its my 25^th (I feel old!) and everyone will be dressing up as their monster of choice! Fun times! I’ve had a dodgy few months… was rushed to hospital in September, had an operation - flair up of the same thing that made me so sick in 2006 and wont have to deal with ever again! And when I got out of hospital I went and badly twisted not one, but TWO ankles!! And wrenched both knees… I got off the crutches, still hobbling around, but I though, after a month that yeay, everything was right in the world again! And then I went and did it again!!! And narrowly missed being hit by a car! Lost three days at work.. Now it’s a month later… am off the crutches, still hobbling along… bonnie calls it ‘the shuffle’ and I concur… no one my age should have to do the shuffle! I still have to take the stairs one at a time.. I got off the train one day and started up the stairs.. this little old infirmed man with a walking stick (which I wanted to steal) not only went down the stairs before I got half way up, but also walked around down there, and had walked all the way back up again… all before I got half way. I fucking hate being handicapped like this! I get like that just with the FM and ME… and then to add insult to the injury, I go and hurt myself like this! and even worse?!? I cant wear high heels!! *wails* it’s the holiday season soon – I have all these parties to go to, and I cant were heels at all!! I have to go shopping, cos the only flats I own are the mary janes I had to buy for work when I did my ankles.. I got distracted… um… okay, what have I been doing? Working, sleeping, reading! I couldn’t tell you how many books I own now, and I also cant tell you how many I have read this year!! I did the reading challenge.. it was meant to be read 50 books in 2008, but I thought it was too easy, so I elected to read 150 instead… I haven't updated my list since number 132… but I have a list on paper… that goes past 225… and I’ve read about 20 or more books since then.. so I guess you can say I smashed it? ;-p in that challenge, I also decided to make sure a certain number of the books were classics or non-fiction… but I cant remember what the goal was or how I am doing with it LOL I have to go back to my forum thread and figure all this stuff out!! My computer died (I lost all my photos and stock that I hadn’t backed up since June! *sob*) and with this year’s tax return I decided to buy a new one.. its prettyful!! The screen is nearly too big for the desk!! But I don't have a chair, and I haven't been able to hook the screen up yet, because we have lost the pin needed to access the router… which is one of the reasons I have been neglecting all my sites…

I’ve been doing some reorganising of posts here… Anything that is a little sensitive has had the settings changed to “friends only” – all for logical reasons… I don't want just anyone to be able to stumble across this stuff.. especially if it is someone the blog might be about……. I’m not too selective about friends here, but its more about things being easily viewable… so I’ve just stuck some stuff behind an unlocked door, so to speak..

So I still havent told about the rest of my holiday... i might try and do that tonight..  However, I thought I might do a random post and tell you more about me - what I am into... the first entry will be about my favourite tv shows… most of them are not on tv any more – normally petering out after one or two seasons… others like Doctor Who are still going strong (Thank God!).

1.       Firefly – a Joss Whedon creation, and in my mind, the best show ever to grace television – and sadly got cancelled too early. Its basically a western in space LOL adventures, witty banter, deep and interesting characters, and a cause to believe in. Nathan Fillion as Mal – Captain of the smuggling ship Serentiy (I have his personalised autograph!!); Summer Glau is River - who has been tampered with by the Alliance, turned into a super assassin, and why they are constantly on the run; Gina Torres as Zoë, Mal's second in command; Alan Tudyk as Wash - the wacky pilot; Morena Baccarin as Inara; Adam Baldwin as Jayne; Jewel Staite ...  Kaylee the mechanic and resident sweetie; Sean Maher is Simon - the doctor - and River's older brother; and  Ron Glass as Shepherd Book. This show is addictive! I am kind of obsessed… okay, more than kind of LOL I dressed as River Tam for my housewarming party (she totally kicks arse! She is my favourite character..), I waited over a month for the collectors edition tin boxset, and I have Nathan Fillion’s personalised signature – I was going to go to the firefly con in Sydney earlier this year, but I had bills and had to give up that heaven..

2.       Spaced – the most brilliantest British comedy ever! It is a Simon Pegg creation, and utterly brilliant! Off beat humour, nerdy sub-sub-sub-references to nerdy pop culture, zany quirky characters, and bizarre and interesting plots. It had two seasons, and I had to stay up til 1am to watch them. A must watch!

3.       Dark Angel – Starting Jessica Alba as Max – the genetically engineered soldier made by Manicore, a secret government organisation. Max and eleven of her ‘brothers and sisters” escape as nine year olds. She lives in an America which has been bought to its knees by a electromagnetic pulse – which fried all the electronics and digital networks.. Their world is one of corruption, poverty, where the bourgeoisie (government bodies, city officials etc) are corrupt and control the proletariat majority through fear and access to resources. She is a sassy female who kicks arse when needed. She has a few select friends, rides a gorgeous motorcycle (a Ninja!) and works for Jam Pony, a bike messenger company – her sideline is as a cat burglar. Which is how she meets Logan (Michael Wetherly) – also known as Eyes Only – who is an underground journalist trying to fight for the greater good. They team up – he searchers for answers for her about her origins and tries to find her siblings for her, and she kicks butt and infiltrates things for his Eyes Only research. And of course there is their little non-romance going on LOL  Jensen Acckles (what a gorgeous creature that one is!) has a couple of different roles – firstly as Ben, Max’s brother turned psychopath killer (who she kills)  and in the second part of the show, plays Alec, the pain in her arse – the clone of Ben, he looks like her brother, but is a smart alec (hence his name), who is constantly looking out for number one (but looks out for her too, just don’t tell anyone LOL). The second series gets kind of chaotic when Max frees all the inmates at Manicore, and there are mutants everywhere.. BTW, I not only lust after Alec, crush on Logan, but Joshua is a cutie LOL not attractive – he is half dog – but he is so damn loveable J

4.       Doctor Who – I’ve been watching this since before I was born! My mother was born the year it started, and she has been watching it all her life.. I grew up on Doctor Who.. Before the new series, my favourite Doctor was played by Tom Baker, but I am totally stuck on David Tennant… The Doctor is a Time Lord – the last of his race, and he travels through time and space in the Tardis, occasionly taking on companions to keep him company on his journeys. Some of his nemisis’s (or is that nemisi?) include the Darleks, Cybermen and The Master and Davros. I want a sonic screwdriver! But I want David Tennant more LOL

The Gundagai GM is actually in Sydney, not here to give ABC Riverina a scoop on a dinosaur.  Its been a joke but also shows a bit what the attitude here is which makes some stuff difficult.  It was Gundagai Shire Council refused to notify the ceremonial ground to DEC, when I notifed it to them and as Council had plans to curb and gutt that ground, that is little wonder. .. .. .. No dinosaur but a very very large bunyip.  (Its recorded but not by the dept that doesnt do conservation despite my efforts to have it protected.)  Keith Hancock also recorded it.

Male monkeys caught 'paying' for sex

Selling sex is said to be humankind's oldest profession, but it may also have deep evolutionary roots.

A new study into our primate cousins has found that male macaque monkeys pay for intercourse by using grooming as a currency.

Michael Gumert of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore made the discovery in a 20-month investigation into 50 long-tailed macaques in Kalimantan Tengah, Indonesia, New Scientist reported.

On average, females had sex 1.5 times per hour, but this rate jumped to 3.5 times per hour immediately after the female had been groomed by a male - and her partner of choice was likely to be the hunky monkey that did the grooming.

Market forces also acted on the value of the transaction.

If there were several females in the area, the cost of buying sex would drop dramatically - a male could "buy" a female for just eight minutes of nit-picking.

But if there were no females around, he would have to groom for up to 16 minutes before sex was offered.

The work supports the theory that biological market forces can explain social behaviour, the British weekly says.

"There is a very well-known mix of economic and mating markets in the human species itself," said Ronald Noe of France's University of Strasbourg.

Before I finished the sentence, which would have resulted in me hitting him across the face with the doll, he grabbed it. In one swift motion his pants were down and he was violenly humping it. Not to get between a man and his Mudkips I started to walk away, because there is no way I'd be caught wrestling a half-naked crazy guy humping a Mudkips.
Needles to say, within 5 to 10 seconds, some girls saw him and started screaming. I cooly walked into a restroom, pretending nothing had ever happened; not that I had intended that outcome, but now that it was in play I didn't want to be involved.
I came back two minutes later, and like any wanton act on school grounds there was now a huge crowd round him. He was still fucking it and baying this real fucked up 'EEEEEEEEEEINNNNF EEEEEEEEEEINNNF' sound. Suddenly a scuffle broke out in the middle, meaning he probably did something stupid.
I asked someone what had happened. A girlfriend of one of the football players tried to get him to stop, but he bit her for trying to take it away. Someone called in a few football players (all dressed up like Road Warrior) who proceeded to pummel the shit out of the guy. Meanwhile the school police were freaking out and having trouble getting in to the situation.
A few minutes later the intruder alarm went off and we were shuffled into classrooms. Over the intercom the principal announced that someone had thrown a flaming plush toy into the library. Uh.. what the hell.
So we were kept there and about 30 minutes later the principal came on again. This time he was saying that whoever was behind the beating should turn themselves in. All of a sudden this woman began yelling "I WILL SUE YOU FOR DAMAGES. YOU LITTLE PUNKS, I'M GONNA SUE..." and it was cut off.
I asked an office later what had happened. Apparently his mother had come to pick him up and threatened to sue for the beating and 'whatever else happened.' The school threatened to counter-sue because of lewd conduct, inciting a riot, and starting a fight.
And that's how my day was.

Study finds no evidence of discarded Spartan babies

Researchers say that the Greek myth that ancient Spartans threw their stunted and sickly newborns off a cliff has not been corroborated by archaeological digs in the area.

Athens Faculty of Medicine Anthropologist Theodoros Pitsios says after more than five years of analysis of human remains culled from the pit, also called an apothetes, researchers found only the remains of adolescents and adults between the ages of 18 and 35.

"There were still bones in the area, but none from newborns, according to the samples we took from the bottom of the pit" of the foothills of Mount Taygete near present-day Sparta.

"It is probably a myth, the ancient sources of this so-called practice were rare, late and imprecise," he added.

Meant to attest to the militaristic character of the ancient Spartan people, moralistic historian Plutarch in particular spread the legend during first century AD.

According to Pitsios, the bones studied to date came from the fifth and sixth centuries BC and come from 46 men, confirming the assertion from ancient sources that the Spartans threw prisoners, traitors or criminals into the pit.

The discoveries shine light on an episode during the second war between Sparta and Messene, a fortified city state independent of Sparta, when Spartans defeated the Messenian hero Aristomenes and his 50 warriors, who were all thrown into the pit, he added.

And now my bit on this! And I apologise if it is garbled. There is a whole swathe of missing human remains from this era in Europe – that they haven’t found delicate infant bones isn’t surprising. The Spartans exposed infants on mountain sides etc (which is to my memory what they did – but correct me if I am wrong – its been years since I studied them in-depth). Evidence of exposure – the deliberate exposing of human remains to the elements – is one of the more accepted explanations given to the lack of evidence of human remains in Europe. Hundreds of years with only a select few recorded burials – most of which display wealth. It’s all a matter of percentages… and there is only a low percentage of burials found in the Bronze and Iron Ages of Europe. This would indicate that the majority of burial types were those with which we can find no trace – i.e. exposure. Bodies left out in the country – left to the elements and scavengers. discarding would suggest bodies dumped in pits – however, refuse pits tend to be close to settlements, and as one of the main types of sites we archaeologists excavate, would have had supplied evidence by now. I have to say, I grew up in the bush, and we have dogs – you see a few bleached cow or kangaroo bones lying around, but they are fairly delicate after a while, and they disintegrate, get washed away, etc. But to be left articulated, it means they have to survive the scavengers – who shred the bodies, or drag pieces away. Some cultures use exposure as part of their funerary rites, and then have a secondary burial of some description – such as the skull houses of the Solomons. However, in Spartan society, if you were not a strong, capable, male, purebred Spartan, you were lesser. Infants were exposed if they had physical deformities, were weak, were half-breds etc – they weren’t given a chance to live, they were discarded and left to the elements. The ones who did get to grow up were also given a harsh childhood – you were meant to be self-sufficient, strong, athletic etc – the perfect warrior. Boys were taken from their mothers at the age of seven and started their warrior training. They were to supplement their diet with whatever they could find – there is this story of a young boy who was sent out into the wild (or did he go there – I have the worse memory LOL) – anyway he found a fox, and though “dinner!” à he hid it under his shift, and took it home – and when it started biting at his tummy, rather than cry out and show his pain, he let it tear his stomach to pieces. What I am trying to say is that if you were seen to be lesser, you weren’t pitied or looked after, you were left to look after yourself – and rather than shaming the family, a baby that was seen to be lesser was left to the elements… and the elements aren’t kind – even on a adult the scavengers and exposure would do a decent job of destroying the remains – imagine what it would do to the delicate bones of a baby!

Anyway, I read this article and just had to say my part. Lack of evidence isn’t evidence of something, it just means nothing has come to light yet.
